Australian Wine - A guide to finding the best wine and wineries in Australia

Wine & Winery Guide Australia

Wine is one of Australia’s most famous exports and has been grown there successfully for close to two hundred years, with wineries being set up all over where conditions were right.  Today, Australia is at the forefront of new-world wines, making a name for itself on the global stage, regularly winning competitions around the world with wines of true quality that their European forefathers would be proud.

Australia is split into eight states with seven states being famous for their wines.  Within each of the states are major grape growing areas with many hundreds of vineyards producing top quality wine, for both the export and internal markets.   Some famous vineyards are those such as Jacobs Creek, Wolf Blass and Rosemount estate,  these are wineries that are seen in the European and US supermarkets regularly but are far from the pinnacle of Australia wine.  To get to the good stuff you have to dig a little deeper.

The Regions
There are around 11 Major wine growing areas in Australia as well as countless others where wineries are less closely grouped.

The South Australian ones include

  • The Barossa Valley
  • The Coonawarra
  • The Clare Valley

New South Wales

  • The Hunter Valley

Western Australia

  • Margaret River
  • The Swan Valley

Victoria

  • The Yarra Valley
  • Mildura
  • The Grampians

Queensland

  • The Granite Belt

Tasmania

  • Pipers River

Because of Australia’s fantastic climate most of the southern part of Australia tends to produce good wine growing areas, generally those close to the sea where rain can be more dependable in Winter.  Areas such as the Barossa were amongst the first to gain a world reputation with wineries such as Jacobs Creek being mass-marketed, but others such as Peter Lehmann Wines and Miranda wines can show that truly exceptional product can go hand in hand with large volume export.

Please move further into the site,  we are currently building a directory of just about every winery in Australia, and a great deal of information about each of the different major wine growing regions, whether they be bordering the Indian ocean in the South West of WA or the Pacific in Eastern New South Wales,  we hope you’re able to find a good drop.
